Message from Vice-Chancellor

Health matters to everyone. As Hong Kong enjoys the longest life expectancy in the world, it has become all the more important for us to address the social determinants of our health. Tackling the health gap requires evidence-informed policy making by the Government as well as action across the whole of society, and it is a pressing issue affecting the sustainability and development of Hong Kong society.

The establishment of the Institute of Health Equity reflects the commitment and determination of CUHK to research, educate and transfer knowledge to achieve health equity in Hong Kong and other parts of the world.  Since 2018, CUHK has co-hosted The Hong Kong Chapter of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN Hong Kong), which aims to mobilize universities, research centres, civil society organizations and businesses to focus on practical problem solving for sustainable development. Reducing health inequalities through understanding and action on the social determinants of health is an important contributor to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals set out by the United Nations. The Institute signifies CUHK’s continuing efforts and commitment to establish centres of excellence in cutting edge research areas with global impact and relevance.

I look forward to seeing the successful development of the Institute to bring about a better and more equitable life for our future generations.
