Distinguished Lecture on “Social Justice and Health Equity” by Professor Sir Michael Marmot co-organized with Strategic Events and External Project Office and Institute of Health Equity, The Chinese University of Hong Kong has been held successfully at Lecture Theatre 5, 2/F, Yasumoto International Academic Park, The Chinese University of Hong Kong on 25 November 2022.
The Lecture
Professor Sir Michael Marmot discussed health equity in relation to social determinants of health, which are the circumstances in which people are born, grow, work, live and age. Drawing on recent reports by Institutes of Health Equity at The Chinese University of Hong Kong and University College London, Professor Marmot focused on the health inequalities faced by Hong Kong people and how the business sector could play a critical role in improving health equity. Apart from understanding the situation, it is all the more important to take action to reduce health inequalities which is a matter of social justice.
The Speaker
Professor Sir Michael Marmot is Professor of Epidemiology at University College London. He is the Director of the University College London Institute of Health Equity and the Co-Director of CUHK Institute of Health Equity. Professor Marmot is the author of The Health Gap: the challenge of an unequal world (2015) and Status Syndrome: how your place on the social gradient directly affects your health (2004). Professor Marmot held the Harvard Lown Professorship from 2014 to 2017 and was the recipient of the Prince Mahidol Award for Public Health 2015. He has been awarded honorary doctorates from 18 universities and has led research groups on health inequalities for over 40 years. He chaired the World Health Organisation’s 2005-08 Commission on Social Determinants of Health, and in 2016 the Pan American Health Organization appointed him chair of its 2016 Commission on Equity and Health Inequalities in the Americas.
